Christiana: Our Heart is in Your Hands
October 10
7 pm |
Christiania: Our Heart is in Your Hands
tells the story of the “free state” of Christiania, a
36-year-old anarchist squatter community occupying an
abandoned military base in the heart of Denmark’s
capital, Copenhagen.Christiania was born in 1971 when
youthful idealism and a severe housing shortage incited
hundreds of young people to “storm the gates” and claim
85 acres of deserted brick buildings, woods, ramparts
and canals as their home. Finding it politically
unpopular to evict the young settlers, the Danish
government declared Christiania a short-term “social
experiment.” With the freedom to experiment, the
Christianites built a distinct culture based on group
consensus, and a thriving economy of restaurants, bars,
cottage industries, and an open hashish trade. In every
respect, Christiania became an alternative that
challenged, inspired, and frightened the society
outside.
36 years later, Christiania is still alive, despite
increasingly uneasy relations with the Danish
government, which plans to “normalize” Christiania.
After years of struggle and compromise, many say that
the end is near for this famous “social experiment”.
Christiania: Our Heart is in Your Hands explores this
crisis from varied perspectives; longtime Christiania
residents, government and police officials who argue the
legality of Christiania’s occupation and the Danish
people, who view Christiania as a symbol of freedom that
they both cherish and fear. This screening made possible
through funding from the City of Seattle Office of Arts
and Cultural Affairs and 4Culture, the King County arts
and culture organization.

Knitting along the Viking Trail
February 12 - 15 |
The Nordic Heritage Museum and Madrona Fiber
Arts are thrilled to announce their sponsorship of the visit
of Elsebeth Lavold, Sweden’s premier knitwear designer,
artist and instructor, to Seattle, February 6-15, 2009.
Through meticulous study of patterns of ornamentation of
Scandinavian craftsmen of the Iron Age, including the Viking
era, Elsebeth Lavold has adapted them to extraordinarily
beautiful stitch patterns and exquisite hand-knitted
garments. Patterns for many of these designs are in her book
“Viking Patterns for Knitting”, published by Trafalgar
Square Publishing in 2000. She has worked with hand-knit
design for more than 20 years and is the author of a number
of books containing her designs for hand-knitters.
During her visit to Seattle, Elsebeth Lavold will be opening
an exhibition of her Viking designs at the Nordic Heritage
Museum in Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood which will run from
February 6 to April 5, 2009. In this exhibit, the
intricate stitch patterns drawn from a thousand years ago
and brought to new life in exquisite garments of unique
knitwear will be displayed. You can also see where the
inspiration comes from, in the many Viking age objects that
are shown in the form of photos, drawings and replicas,
ranging in size from minute pieces of jewelry to huge rock
carvings.
While in Seattle, Elsebeth Lavold will be offering classes
for knitters in the design and hand-knitting techniques used
to make these unique garments at both the Nordic Heritage
Museum and The Madrona Fiber Arts Winter Retreat.
Classes at the Museum will be held during the opening of the
exhibition February 6-8, 2009. The Madrona Fiber Arts
Winter Retreat will be held February 12-15, 2009 at the
Hotel Murano in Tacoma, Washington. In addition to teaching
classes at the Madrona Winter Retreat, Elsebeth Lavold will
also be the guest speaker at the Saturday evening banquet
bringing to life her research and design inspiration which
spans a millennium with her unique contemporary knitwear.
